Is Nonprofit Work Your True Calling?

Nonprofit life is an amazing opportunity today. If you have a passion and want fulfillment and freedom in your work you have come to the right place. But how do you know if you are ready to take the leap? Here are some basic questions you should be asking yourself before jumping in first:

1) Do you find yourself bored with the monotony of your 9-5 job?

Nonprofit life offers a work environment that you are free to create for yourself. Like being outdoors? Great, maybe you will focus on environmental conservation. Interested in talking to people? Maybe you will create a nonprofit centering on care and conversation for seniors. The possibilities are unlimited and you will almost never be bored.

2) Would you consider yourself a creative problem solver?

When you are involved in a nonprofit each day you are faced with new opportunities that will require you to be curious and creative. There are hurdles to leap over but they are always interesting and make your day worth it. On top of that, you get to multi-task daily, which makes each moment unique and exciting.

3) Do you often have big ideas that you think would help the world?

Day dreamers welcome! When you have a big idea it might seem daunting to take the first step, but it will make your passion into your work. Ultimately, the purpose of a nonprofit is to make a positive difference in the world. That kind of energy is a fertile ground for bright new ideas. Yours could be next.

4) Do you enjoy talking to new people about their life experiences?

Not only will you meet awesome people on a daily basis, you will also meet people who are dedicated to changing the world. Your days will be filled with excitement and purpose as you work towards a common goal. That’s not even mentioning the people you will meet whose lives are positively impacted by what you are accomplishing.

5) Are you a leader in your friend group?

You don’t have to be the alpha dog, nonprofits need all types of people and minds to make visions become reality. If you are a leader you may want to be on the board of directors so that you have more say in the direction and the mission of the organization.

6) Do you like to collaborate with those around you or work alone?

If you work in a nonprofit you will work closely with others who share your visions. This doesn’t just include your team, it’s thought leaders, politicians, movers and shakers. You will be able to share ideas with leaders that can take your message to a larger audience. In our increasingly interconnected world, finding like-minded thinkers can lead to movements that change lives.

7) Does inspiring others get you excited about your day?

Nonprofit team members often derive a huge sense of pride and fulfillment from their work. On top of that nonprofits offer fantastic outlets for individuals to make a real and lasting difference. Ask yourself: what do I want my legacy to be? Showing others that there is hope and light in the world is a great place to start. Imagine that as your day-to-day work!

So there you have it. You can set yourself on a new and exciting course in life just by exploring your options in the nonprofit sector.
