You see a need and have an idea about how to meet it, but you’re new at this whole endeavor of starting a nonprofit. To learn plenty on how to get started and how to succeed, simply search keywords like “nonprofit” to find a multitude of websites, blogs, and news stories about successful NPOs. There will be no shortage of resources, however, the information overload can be overwhelming for a newbie; these five blogs feature well-known, respected experts in nonprofit marketing strategies. Highly rated, they provide links and downloads to help you find your way.
Beth Kanter has thirty years’ experience in all things nonprofit—training, capacity building, technology, fundraising, evaluation and marketing. She is co-author of The Networked Nonprofit and Measuring the Networked Nonprofit, used globally in college courses. Beth’s Blog, one of the longest running nonprofit blogs, consistently places in the top ranks among its peers. Her blog’s subtitle, How Connected Nonprofits Leverage Networks and Data for Social Change, says it all.
John Haydon’s blog reflects his expertise in digital marketing with insights into online fundraising and Facebook and social media marketing, as well as content marketing. He is the founder of Inbound Zombie, which consults with nonprofits to increase awareness, engagement and fundraising capabilities. Author of Facebook Marketing for Dummies, he is also a regular contributor to Huffington Post, Social Media Examiner, NPEngage and the Razoo Foundation.
Katya Andresen, author of Robin Hood Marketing, originally created and managed Network for Good’s NonProfit Marketing Blog. Now managed by Network for Good nonprofit marketing and advisory staff, its writers cover the best in marketing trends, fundraising techniques and technology developments. From effective email campaigns to fundraising essentials to recurring donors, this blog has something for everyone.
Frog Loop, now known as Care2’s Digital Engagement Blog, is a pioneer in online advocacy. Its bloggers write on donor recruitment, online fundraising, advocacy and social media. Primary blogger Allyson Kapin is one of Fast Company’s “Most Influential Women in Tech,” and a founding partner of Rad Campaign. Her work stresses innovative strategies that empower nonprofits and socially conscious businesses for positive change. Care2 is a privately held advocacy network that supports NPO growth through commitment and passion.
Kivi’s Nonprofit Communications Blog targets do-it-yourself, shoestring nonprofits that have limited financial and staff resources. Blogging almost daily, Kivi Leroux Miller has something to say about recruiting donors, raising awareness and creative strategies. With experience in grant making and seeking, she has developed a talent for wading through words to get to the meat. She brings the same skill to her workshops, webinars and e-books.
Nearly every nonprofit or NPO-related business has a blog (and, by the way, so should yours!). Many also tout their services. The difficulty is recognizing expertise when you read it. Take the time to follow these recommended blogs, check out their archives, and do a little research on each “thought leader” at the helm. By starting with our list, you’ll get a good feel for those who are true leaders in the nonprofit realm and and can be trusted examples to follow.
